Vol. 233 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Old Age Pensions Reductions.

75.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware of the great hardship which is often caused when an old age pension is substantially reduced following the granting of an increased special allowance to the pensioner; and what steps he proposes to take to rectify this situation.

If the special allowance mentioned by the Deputy is that payable under the Army Pensions Acts, I would point out that since 1960, the adjustment in old age pension which may be made because of an increase in this allowance cannot result in a smaller income to the recipient from the two payments. Unless there is some other factor involved, I cannot see how hardship is caused by the adjustment.
