Vol. 234 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Waterford Road Grants.

24.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received a request from the Waterford County Council to receive a deputation to discuss the level of road grants for the county; and if he will fix a date at his earliest convenience to receive this deputation.

I have received such a request and the council have been informed that it is not the practice to receive deputations from individual road authorities in the matter of Road Fund grants. Similar requests have been received from several other county councils and if I received one deputation I would, in fairness, have to receive all deputations. This would not be practicable.

Is the Minister not aware that the railway line extending from Fermoy through Dungarvan to Waterford city has been closed by the action of CIE, throwing heavy traffic on the main roads? In these exceptional circumstances, does he not think it would be not only courteous but necessary to receive a deputation from Waterford County Council to see what could be done to reduce the dangers on the road and to help the council to carry out the necessary repairs and maintenance?

As I say, I would have to receive deputations from all county councils.

But they do not all have a railway line closed.

Any special circumstances in regard to Waterford will be considered.
