Vol. 234 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Special Leave for Local Authority Employees.

31.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will arrange for members of local authorities and subsidiary committees who are employed by local authorities to be allowed special leave from their employment in order to attend meetings of the bodies and committees of which they are members; if he is aware that the County Manager for Laois-Offaly has informed members of local committees that he has no authority to grant leave other than sick leave, annual leave and compassionate leave; and if he will expedite the making of the necessary arrangements so that those concerned may be enabled to carry out their public duties on the committees to which they have been elected.

The grant of special leave to officers and servants of local authorities is a matter for each local authority in the first instance and in the case of officers is also subject to my sanction. I am not aware of the need for any special arrangements to deal with the position stated by the Deputy.
