Vol. 234 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Late Night Café Nuisances.

34.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that nuisance is frequently committed in public places adjoining a late night café (details supplied); and that notwithstanding complaints by owners and occupiers of houses in the neighbourhood no action has yet been taken by the authorities to prevent a continuation of this undesirable state of affairs; and if effective remedial action will now be taken.

I am aware that some complaints on the lines suggested in the question have been made.

Some of the matters complained of, such as the slamming of car-doors and the starting and revving of car and motor-cycle engines late at night, are inseparable in practice from the carrying-on of the business of a late-night café where motor vehicles are constantly pulling up and moving away. It is not possible for the Garda Síochána to take any action that would significantly improve the position in this respect.

Some other matters have also been complained of and these have been attended to. Several prosecutions were brought in the years 1966 and 1967 and at the same time Garda supervision in the area was increased. This increased supervision has since been maintained and, in recent times, nothing calling for their intervention has come to their notice.

Would the Minister consider closing the café?

We have got to live with the cafés and the traffic that attends them.

Would the Minister any longer express surprise in regard to how this Deputy was elected, seeing that those poor devils did not know any better than to vote for him?

A very erudite remark.
