Vol. 234 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Vocational Guidance.

49.

asked the Minister for Education whether the introduction of a vocational guidance system in Irish education is contemplated; and whether he is aware of the urgency of the introduction of such a system.

It is my intention to provide as quickly as possible a system of vocational guidance for all post-primary pupils throughout the country. The first step in implementing this is the establishment of an adequate school psychological service. A number of psychologists has been appointed to the staff of my Department and I propose to add to their number each year until the service is adequate.

Furthermore, I intend giving to selected teachers courses of training as guidance masters in their own schools and the initial course has been arranged for July next. These teachers will work in conjunction with the school psychologists and at the same time make available to the school leavers information obtained from the Department of Labour in relation to careers, job opportunities, etc.

Does the Minister envisage that there will be vocational guidance for those leaving primary schools?

With the abolition of the primary certificate, the national teachers in primary schools will now, in effect, have the particular function of preparing report cards on which they will make an assessment of the student's capabilities. On the basis of this report card, made by the principal of the national school, consideration of the student's development in post-primary education will be made.
