Vol. 234 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Quality of Native Raw Materials.

61.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the information contained in the National Industrial and Economic Council Report No. 22 to the effect that complaints have been made about native raw materials, their supply and their quality; if he will make a statement on the matter; what raw materials have been the subject of complaints; and what steps have been taken to remedy the complaints.

The native raw materials about which complaints were made in the course of the Annual Review of Industrial Progress were— pigs for the bacon industry, lambs for the meat export industry, wool for the carpet industry and hides and skins for the fellmongery and tanning industry. Matters affecting the bacon and meat export industries are being dealt with by the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries.

Legislation has recently been introduced to secure an improvement in the grading and marketing of native wool. Certain measures have already been taken by the industries concerned to bring about an improvement in the quality of hides and skins available from individual butchers. In view particularly of the large number of butchers involved the problem is not one which could be solved satisfactorily by official action.
