Vol. 234 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Overloading of Vehicles.

30.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of road accidents in Dublin city in the last 12 months resulting from the overloading of trucks and other road vehicles.

In general, Garda statistics do not attempt to show specific causes of road accidents, which are frequently a matter of opinion, and information of the kind asked for is not available from the records.

Would the Minister not state that there are a number, and that when an overloaded truck over-turns, it is not registered as an accident? Is the Minister aware of that fact?

Overloading has been treated as a contributory cause in some cases. We have not statistics to give a satisfactory reply to the Deputy's question.

Is the Minister aware that there is a marked increase in the number of cases of overloaded trucks overturning?

I am not so aware: I have no information that that is so.
