Vol. 234 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mentally Handicapped Children.

44.

asked the Minister for Health the number of severely mentally handicapped children awaiting admission to institutions in the whole country; and the number that it is hoped to admit in the coming financial year.

At 31st March, 1967—the latest date for which figures are available—there were 321 severely mentally handicapped children on health authority waiting lists for admission to special institutions. Up-to-date returns are at present being compiled and when the information is available I will give the Deputy the details he requires.

During the past year one hundred severely mentally handicapped children were admitted to special institutions and over the coming 12 months I expect the admissions to double that number.

Could the Minister mention any particular type of institution to which they were admitted?

I have not a list of them here.
