Vol. 234 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Liffey Fishery Pollution.

10.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the danger that increasing pollution will eliminate salmon in the Liffey and its tributaries in the very near future; and whether he intends taking any measures to combat this danger.

I am not so aware. I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 16 of 21st February last when I indicated that major drainage works which are proposed for the Dublin area are being so designed that they will remedy to a considerable extent any pollution problems in the Liffey and its tributaries.

Can the Minister say when the present rate of pollution will be cut down? Is he confident this will be done soon, because if the present tendency is continued, there will be no salmon in the Liffey in a matter of less than ten years?

When these drainage works are provided, the level of pollution will be reduced.

Has the Minister any idea when they will be provided?

That is a separate question.

Put it down again for next week.
