Vol. 234 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wheat Imports.

9.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries how much foreign wheat it is proposed to import for animal feed; and the price per ton cif at the port of Cork.

Licences have been issued for the import of 70,000 tons of feed wheat or milo between now and the end of August. The current cif price for Cork for feed wheat is about £23 per ton.

Could the Minister say how this compares in value with home-grown barley?

One of the particular reasons for importing this wheat and/ or milo is mainly its usage in poultry production because of its high energy content and I think comparison in that sense would not make a great deal——

Comparisons might get the Minister into a great deal of trouble in relation to his policy on barley.
