asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is satisfied that the consultations held with traders in Moore Street by Dublin Corporation will now permit the Corporation to proceed with the further stages of their development plan in the area in partnership with a firm (name supplied).

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is satisfied that the consultations held with open traders in Moore Street by Dublin Corporation will now permit the Corporation to proceed with the further stages of their development plan in the area in partnership with a firm (name supplied).

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 21 and 22 together.

As I indicated on 7th November, 1967, in reply to previous questions by the Deputy, the promotion of their planning objectives is a matter for Dublin Corporation as the planning authority. I understand that the corporation has had extensive discussions with various business interests in the Dublin central redevelopment area, including those in the Moore Street area, and that it is now proposed to invoke the statutory procedure for the acquisition of property to enable the redevelopment of the area bounded by Moore Street, Parnell Street, Chapel Lane and Sampsons Lane to proceed.

Seemingly the Minister is not involved if there is not any appeal. Is he aware that traders who have been in business in this area for many generations are not in agreement with the plan, that they have very grave objections to it?

I have no doubt that if the matter comes before me, those views will be presented to me.

Is the Minister aware that if this cross-Channel company come in here, they will in effect control a large historic business area of this capital city? Is the Minister aware of this and does he agree with it?

The matter is not before me at present.
