Vol. 234 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Suck Weir.

35.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will request the Office of Public Works to remove the weir on the River Suck at Ballinasloe, County Galway as there is no need for it now because a new sewerage system has been installed there.

The Commissioners of Public Works are not empowered to interfere with the sluices at Ballinasloe except as part of a comprehensive scheme for the Suck catchment under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945.

Who does control the weir at Ballinasloe?

I do not know the answer to that.

Is it private?

I do not know.

Perhaps the Parliamentary Secretary would advert to the fact that Deputy Gibbons has asked two separate Ministers, both of whom have substantially made the reply that they have no function in regard to this matter. Would it be unreasonable to ask the Parliamentary Secretary, since he says that he is not concerned with it unless it is part of a drainage scheme, to inquire who is maintaining the weir?

I would say it would be even more appropriate that Deputy Gibbons himself should make the inquiry.

I suspect he knows.

As I have already pointed out the only way the Office of Public Works would be concerned with the River Suck is in connection with an arterial drainage scheme.
