Vol. 234 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Control of Distributive Trade.

45.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether any steps are contemplated to ensure that the distribution and retail trades in this country remain under native control; and whether any restriction on the spread of foreign-controlled companies in this sector is under consideration.

There has always been a certain amount of foreign participation in the distributive trades in this country and I would refer the Deputy to the recent NIEC report on the subject. I do not consider that the present situation calls for restrictive measures such as the Deputy appears to envisage, but the Government are keeping the matter under review.
