Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Contracts of District Medical Officers.

49.

asked the Minister for Health the terms of contract of a district medical officer.

A district medical officer is a part-time officer whose salary is £1,256 a year proceeding to a maximum of £1,846.

The duties of his office are prescribed in detail in the Health (Duties of District Medical Officers) Order, 1954.

The primary duty, as laid down by the Order, is to afford adequate medical care and advice at a dispensary, or elsewhere as may be required, to residents in his district whose names are on the General Medical Services Register and to their dependants. He is also required to be responsible for the care in respect of motherhood of any woman in his district whose name is on the General Medical Services Register in respect of whom no medical practitioner has undertaken to provide such care.
