Vol. 234 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Radio Interference.

7.

Mr. S. Barrett

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of radio interference over a fairly wide area of North Clare; if the cause of the interference is known; and what efforts are being made to eliminate it.

I understand that the Authority are at present investigating three such complaints. Two of these are due to a high tension fault and in the third case the source of interference is a neon sign. The Authority are taking steps, in consultation with the ESB, to have the sources suitably suppressed.

The majority of instances of interference with both radio and television reception in County Clare have been traced to faults on the high tension network which, in this area and particularly along the coast line, is exposed to erosion, salt deposits and the effect of high gales. These difficulties are, I understand, having the special attention of the ESB.
