Vol. 234 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Arklow Parking Facilities.

9.

asked the Minister for Local Government if there are any proposals for further restriction of parking in Arklow; and, if so, if it will be possible to defer the implementation of such proposals until additional convenient parking areas are available in the town.

Any revision of the parking restrictions in Arklow is a matter in the first instance for the Garda Commissioner who, I understand, is considering some modifications of the existing restrictions in the town.

10.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider the feasibility of providing alternative routes for heavy traffic through the town of Arklow so that heavy traffic will not have to go through the main street; and if he will consider making adequate grants available to the local authority for the provision of such alternative routes and to provide additional car parking areas in the town.

The planning and provision of road routes in an area is a matter for the local authority or authorities concerned. I am aware that Arklow, like other towns, is faced with the problem of through traffic having to use the town streets. I am also aware that Arklow Urban District Council have had this problem under consideration and are proposing to engage expert advice to suggest the best solution. This proposal has recently been received in my Department and is under consideration. It is hoped to communicate with the Council thereon at an early date.
