Vol. 234 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disposal of Car Bodies.

31.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will find out the cost of a machine for the disintegration of car bodies; if he is prepared to subsidise the purchase of such a machine; and, if so, to what extent.

32.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will compel local authorities to co-operate to purchase a hydraulic press for the disposal of car bodies.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to answer Questions Nos. 31 and 32 together.

I do not propose to compel local authorities to purchase special machinery for the disposal of car bodies and I am not prepared to subsidise the purchase of such machinery. In the circumstances I do not consider that any useful purpose would be served by my making inquiries about the cost of the machinery.

I understand that at least one commercial firm in Dublin, with depots in some provincial centres, converts disused cars into scrap. Its services are availed of on a contract basis by a number of local authorities.

Would Dublin Corporation consider having a "go" at them?

I think Dublin Corporation is one of the authorities involved.

There are many disused cars lying about.

Dublin County Council, Dublin Corporation and Dún Laoghaire Corporation are availing of this firm's services.
