Vol. 234 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Abbey Players in Italy.

1.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether the Irish Embassy in Italy arranged any Embassy function for the Abbey Players during their recent visit there to enable them to meet a representative cross-section of the Italian theatrical, artistic and literary worlds.

The purpose of the Abbey Theatre Company's recent visit to Italy was to participate in the International Theatre Festival at Florence and, since they spent very little time in Rome in transit, the question of arranging an Embassy function there did not arise.

During their four-day stay in Florence the Abbey Company had opportunities at receptions held in their honour by the Festival authorities and prominent local friends of Ireland to meet distinguished personalities in the cultural sphere. The Chargé d'Affaires ad interim was of course in attendance at the Festival to represent the Embassy and to provide any necessary assistance.
