Vol. 234 No. 9

Chester Beatty Library Bill, 1968 [Seanad]: Committee and Final Stages.

SECTION 1.
Question proposed: "That section 1 stand part of the Bill."

We all know that this Library has been valued at a very, very substantial figure. There is provision in the various Finance Acts by virtue of which a library of this sort, bestowed on the nation, is exempt from death duties. So far as I know, there is no provision by virtue of which such a library is exempt from probate fees. The probate fees which arose because of the value of this Library must have been very substantial indeed. It would not be right that I should mention the figures here but I have heard that the sum is a very large one. Quite honestly, I think it is niggardly of the State to exact probate fees on a munificent gift of this sort. While the State may require the money, at the same time, this exacting of probate fees is a little too niggardly from our point of view. I would ask the Taoiseach to have this examined. It may be a matter he could consider, if necessary, at a later stage.

I share the Deputy's opinion on that and I shall certainly have the matter looked into.
