Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Melting of Irish Currency.

33.

asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to reports that Irish currency has been melted down and sold for its silver content; and if he will initiate investigations to discover (a) the amount of coinage involved, (b) the source from which it was taken and (c) persons responsible; and if such information will be placed before the Dáil at the earliest possible date.

I have seen reports in the press that Irish silver coins have been melted down for their silver content. As I indicated in reply to a question on 7th March, I am advised by the Central Bank that there is no evidence that this is being done on a large scale.

The reports have been brought to the notice of the Garda Síochána for investigation. The melting down of Irish coins without permission is an offence both here and in Britain.
