Vol. 234 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Facilities for Sightless Persons.

20.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will consider making free travel facilities, free radio licences and free electricity available to sightless persons whether or not they are in receipt of blind pensions.

Although they are also available to blind persons in receipt of a pension from my Department, the schemes of free travel and free electricity introduced last year were designed primarily for the benefit of the necessitous aged. In addition to blind pensioners, free radio licences are already available to blind persons in receipt of assistance under a blind welfare scheme operated by a health authority.

No further extension of these schemes in the case of blind persons is contemplated.
