Vol. 235 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Vocational School Caretakers.

17.

asked the Minister for Education whether he has received from County Waterford Vocational Education Committee a request for his sanction to a resolution passed by the committee to pay an increase of wages to the caretakers of the schools under the control of the committee; if he is prepared to sanction it; and, if so, when.

County Waterford Vocational Education Committee proposed various wage increases in the period January to March, 1968. My sanction for the increases awarded in January and February was not sought but the minutes of the March meeting revealed that sanction was, in fact, awaited. On 29th April, 1968, my Department reminded the committee that responsibility for determining wage increases rested with them in accordance with the terms of the relevant circular letters issued in 1951 and 1963 and that my sanction might be presumed for wage increases which were so determined.
