Vol. 235 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Condition of Traffic Island.

20.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that Dublin County Council have left the traffic island at Walkinstown Cross in an unsightly condition with rubble, refuse and weeds; and if steps will now be taken to tidy the site.

This is entirely a matter for Dublin County Council. I understand that in fact they are arranging to have the rubble, etc., on this temporary traffic island removed.

Would the Minister consider the erection of a commemorative plaque or other memorial on this island? This is a typical example of town planning and good taste of the staff of Dublin County Council; it is covered with weeds, builders' rubble, county council rubble, machinery and noisome waste of one kind or another.

If Deputy Ryan is not on speaking terms with any county council representatives in the area, I will convey his remarks to them.

Is the Minister aware that the officials are to blame, and not the councillors, and that there must be in all of Ireland no engineering department as lax as the engineering department of Dublin County Council? Indeed, you can apply the same to all departments.

There is a long history to this particular site about which Deputy Ryan may not be aware.

I am aware that Deputy Dowling had a serious accident there a year ago and even Deputy Dowling's wounds could not convey the need to Dublin County Council to make this a safe thoroughfare.

The history of this is well known.
