Vol. 235 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Parking Fines.

29.

asked the Minister for Justice the amount collected in the last five years in respect of parking offences in Dublin.

The total amount remitted to my Department in respect of "fines-on-the-spot" collected in the Dublin city and county area for the period 1st June, 1963, up to the present was £210,673. This figure does not take into account money collected in May, 1968, and not remitted to my Department.

In addition to this sum, some fines were imposed by the courts. Statistics relating to these fines, however, have not been compiled and it would involve a disproportionate amount of work to extract them from the records at this stage.

Is the Minister aware that only about one-tenth of that money has now been applied to the same area in the provision of car parking accommodation?

That is a separate question.

It is, and I do not accept what is in it.

Could the Minister say when is it proposed to carry out the stated intention of transferring the duty of levying these fines from the members of the Garda Síochána to traffic wardens?

As soon as it is practicable.

There is power, is there not?

The legislation is before the Seanad.

It cannot be done until that Bill is passed?

It cannot.
