Vol. 235 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Airport Employment.

9.

Mr. S. Barrett

asked the Minister for Transport and Power what changes, if any, will take place at Shannon Airport as a result of the transfer of management to Aer Rianta; and if he can give an assurance that no redundancy of present employees will occur as a result of the change.

On the transfer of the management of Shannon Airport to Aer Rianta that body will, as my agent, become responsible for the day-to-day management of the airport. General airport policy will remain under my control. As I have already indicated, the position of staff affected by the change will be safeguarded.

Mr. S. Barrett

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say what will be the position of the manual workers at present employed by the Department of Transport and Power and if the present Civil Service staff will be withdrawn from the airport?

As the Minister made clear in his original statement on this matter, there will be full consultation with the staff in connection with this transfer. It may be taken that the positions of all the Department's employees will be maintained and in connection with the Civil Service end of it, I take it the transfer will be in the form of a straightforward transfer to State-sponsored bodies—I cannot get the word——

Seconded.

Yes, by seconding the staff.
