Vol. 235 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Condition of Social Welfare Offices.

30.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the shabby and unclean appearance of the entrance to the headquarter offices of the Department of Social Welfare in Aras Mhic Dhiarmada, Dublin; and if steps will be taken to clean it and to maintain it in a presentable condition.

I do not agree that the general appearance of the entrance to the Department of Social Welfare at Aras Mhic Dhiarmada warrants the description "shabby and unclean". The floor and side walls to the entrance lobby are faced with marble which presents a naturally dull appearance. The inner wall was redecorated last year and the glass doors and windows in the outer wall are cleaned every month. The floor is vacuum-cleaned every morning and washed out at least twice a week.

It is proposed to clean and lacquer the bronze framework of the doors and windows in the entrance lobby and to replace the seating in the lobby with modern furniture.

That is the important thing. They are now going to do the bronze, which was never done since they went in there. CIE does it every year, and this would not have been done if I had not brought it to the Parliamentary Secretary's notice. The Minister is so seldom there he does not see it.
