Vol. 235 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

6.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received proposals from Sligo County Council for the appointment of a consulting engineer for Lough Talt water improvement scheme; if so, on what date; and when he proposes to give approval to this appointment.

Sligo County Council's proposals for the appointment of a consulting engineer to prepare a preliminary report for the Lough Talt water improvement scheme were submitted to my Department on 14th February, 1968, and are at present under consideration.

I expect to be in a position to convey a decision on the proposals shortly.

Is the Minister aware that there are many residents in Tubbercurry town and outskirts who have no water in their taps and no water to flush toilets, due to the heavy demand of a group of industries in the town on the water? I would ask the Minister to treat this matter as urgent.

I expect to convey a decision shortly.

asked the Minister for Local Government when work will commence on extensions of water and sewerage along Castlebar Road, Swinford, County Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Proposals for extensions of Swinford water supply along the Castlebar and Foxford roads which were submitted by Mayo County Council on 1st May, 1968, are at present under examination in my Department.

There are no proposals before my Department for sewerage extensions in Swinford.

Does the Minister appreciate that there is very considerable delay at all times in his Department when proposals of this nature are sent up from Mayo County Council and that the people are really fed up with that situation?

We are discussing a specific scheme.

There are no proposals at all about sewerage extensions. In so far as the rest of the Deputy's supplementary question is concerned, more work in this line has never been done in this country than is being done at present.

That is what the Minister says.

Fianna Fáil control Mayo County Council.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received proposals from Sligo County Council for a sewerage scheme at Rosses Point, County Sligo; if so, on what date; what the nature of the proposals are; and, if not already approved, when he contemplates sanctioning this scheme which is urgently needed for this progressive seaside resort.

Revised preliminary proposals for a sewerage scheme for Rosses Point were submitted to my Department by Sligo County Council on 17th November, 1967.

I expect to be in a position to convey a decision on these proposals shortly.

Has an allocation been made from the Minister's Department for sanitary services in Sligo yet?

That is a different question. I was asked about this sewerage scheme at Rosses Point. In reply, I said I expect to convey a decision shortly on these proposals. If the Deputy wants to know anything generally about sanitary services in Sligo, he should put down a question.

Is the Minister aware that the well-known seaside resort and tourist centre of Rosses Point has no sewerage system yet and that the county medical officer of health will no longer give approval for the discharge of sewerage into the sea, consequently holding up the development of Rosses Point? Will the Minister sanction this scheme as soon as possible?

It is fourth on the priority list of Sligo County Council.
