Vol. 235 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hotel and Restaurant Prices.

5.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is satisfied that prices of goods and services in hotels and restaurants are regulated within the principles of fair trade; and whether he considers sufficient such powers as he has in this matter.

The maximum charges for accommodation and table d'hote meals in hotels are set out in the Official Hotel Guide published annually by Bord Fáilte and these prices may not be exceeded without the prior consent of the Board. All complaints of charges in excess of the published prices are fully investigated by Bord Fáilte.

The provisions of the Tourist Traffic Acts concerning the registration of premises and the publication of maximum prices do not apply to restaurants. However, where complaints are received by Bord Fáilte against such establishments, the complaints are followed up through the Regional Tourism Organisations with a view to having them remedied.

In addition to the machinery I have mentioned there is also the effect of free competition between the various establishments. I do not consider that any additional powers are called for at the present time.

Is the Minister aware that some of the hotels are certainly trying to kill the goose that lays the golden egg? Is he satisfied that the inspectorate, or whoever they have in the Department, are investigating these cases? There was a case recently where a Deputy was charged 8s 6d for a cup of coffee and two rolls. He complained about it and brought it to the notice——

They must have heard about the increase in salaries.

What about a charge of 33s for steak and onions?

One can never be completely satisfied that all of those things have been corrected. By arrangement with Bord Fáilte, everything possible is being done to cover a particular complaint.

What action do you take against those hotel-owners who fleece the guests who are laying the golden eggs and who, in so fleecing, are harming our tourist industry?

They can find themselves wiped off the list of recommended establishments.

Have any been wiped off that list?

That is a separate question.

I have not the information.

Are hotel prices subject to the terms of the Control of Prices Act, 1966?

I do not think so but I have not——

I think service is included.

Next question.
