Vol. 235 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Connemara Telephone Service.

14.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that the telephone service in Connemara is most unsatisfactory; and, if so, what he intends to do about it.

I am aware that the standard of service through Clifden exchange, which serves most of the exchanges in the West Connemara area, is unsatisfactory. The main cause of the trouble is that the trunk circuits between Clifden and Galway are subject to frequent breakdowns owing to the exposed nature of this very long route. A major trunk cable which is planned for this route is expected to be completed within three years. In the meantime every effort will be made to improve the service on the existing route.
