Vol. 235 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water Supply Schemes.

32.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (a) the amount paid by way of Government grant towards the Glenascaul group water scheme at Oranmore, County Galway, (b) the name of the makers who supplied the piping, (c) the report of the Institute of Research and Standards on the piping supplied to this scheme and (d) why this scheme is not yet in operation.

A dispute has arisen in this case between the group and the manufacturers of the pipes and while there is a reasonable expectation that a settlement will shortly be reached the matter may be the subject of legal proceedings.

For this reason I think that it would be inappropriate to supply the information requested by the Deputy. I may add that every effort has been made by my Department to resolve the difficulties arising, and instalments of grants amounting to £360 have been paid to the group to-date.

33.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he expects work will commence on the regional water supply for Kilkieran, Carna, County Galway.

There is no change in the position regarding the Kilkieran-Carna regional water supply scheme since my reply to the Deputy's question of 2nd May, 1967, when I stated that preliminary proposals for the scheme had been approved in principle by my Department.

No further proposals in the matter have been submitted to date.

34.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he will sanction the proposals submitted to him by Cork County Council for the extension of Ballincollig regional supply scheme to serve the areas of (a) Gurteen, Inniscarra, (b) Waterfall to Ballinora Road and Corbally and (c) Waterfall to Warner's Cross; and when he expects that work on these extensions will commence.

Cork County Council's proposals for water supply extensions to the areas mentioned by the Deputy are under consideration in my Department. I am not in a position to say when a decision thereon is likely to issue.

35

asked the Minister for Local Government if the Kerry County Council will carry out the necessary improvements to the source of the Glenbeigh water supply which, as it was originally designed to supply 20 houses and is now connected to 110 houses, is totally inadequate to meet the requirements.

Kerry County Council's proposals for the Glenbeigh water supply improvement scheme were received in my Department on 13th May, 1968 and are at present under examination. I am not yet in a position to say when a decision thereon is likely to issue.

36.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has yet been able in conjunction with Kerry County Council to provide the necessary finance for the re-laying of the old Killorglin watermain from Oulagh to Glounigillagh Cross, Caragh Lake, to a group scheme of 250 houses, as Caragh Lake, Cromane and the adjoining areas are dependent on it.

There is no change in the position since my reply to Question No. 12 of 8th May, 1968 when I stated that a decision on Kerry County Council's proposals for the laying of a new watermain from Oulagh to Glounigillagh Cross must await the outcome of the review of water and sewerage schemes which is at present being carried out by sanitary authorities throughout the country.

37.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will arrange for the approval of the necessary finance through the Kerry County Council for the headworks and storage facilities for the Inch, Castlemaine water scheme, as a group scheme of over 400 applicants is dependent on it.

A decision on the Inch/Castlemaine regional water supply schemes must await the outcome of the review of regional schemes generally which is at present being carried out by sanitary authorities throughout the county.

38.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will arrange the necessary finance for the Valentia water scheme, County Kerry to enable work to start immediately as extensive hotel and tourist development projects of vital importance to the economy of the island will be lost if there is excessive delay.

There is no change in the position regarding the Valentia water scheme since my reply to the Deputy's question of 14th February last when I stated that a decision on this scheme must await the outcome of the review of regional water supply schemes which is being carried out by sanitary authorities throughout the country.

39.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether there are any proposals before his Department for the extension of the Gorey water scheme to the Ballygarrett and Kilmuckridge areas, County Wexford; and if so, when sanction may be expected.

Contract documents for Stage 2 of the Gorey regional water supply scheme, which includes an extension to Ballygarrett, are under consideration in my Department. I hope to be in a position to convey a decision on this scheme shortly.

Contract documents for the Kilmuckridge regional water scheme and also proposals for a group water scheme to serve the Kilmuckridge area are also under consideration.

40.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the importance of the proposed magnesite industry at Ballinacourty, County Waterford, he will allow full subsidy of 50 per cent on the loan charges for the proposed loan to be raised by Water-ford County Council to finance the provision of water for this industry.

As the proposed water supply is intended solely for the industry in question, the payment of subsidy by my Department would not be appropriate.
