Vol. 235 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Record Card.

75.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that vocational teachers in North Tipperary have been asked to enter on a school record card information in relation to a pupil's home environment, health and family; and that such teachers object to providing in this manner information of a confidential nature which is outside their normal function; and if he will take steps to revise the record card to exclude such information.

The school record cards which the Deputy enclosed with his question will contain the information which the principals of national schools will supply in confidence to the headmasters of secondary and vocational schools in respect of pupils transferring from primary to post-primary education. The information to which the Deputy seems to take objection is vital to the conductors of post-primary schools in enabling them to provide the best and most suitable education for the pupils. I might add that the national teachers as a body have not the slightest objection to supplying such confidential information.

Would the Minister be kind enough to supply me with a copy of this card on which the information is?

I will take a note of that. It is very important from the point of view of career guidance.
