Vol. 235 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Road Junction Warning.

44.

asked the Minister for Local Government why the "Winking Willie" warning device was removed during recent roadworks at the junction of Belgrave Road and Palmerston Road, Rathmines, Dublin; and when traffic lights will be provided at this dangerous junction.

This is a matter for Dublin Corporation. I understand that, as the standards supporting it would have interfered with the layout of the junction following the road improvement scheme referred to by the Deputy, it was necessary for the corporation to remove the "Winking Willie". New illuminated stop signs, however, have been provided at the junction in lieu of the old stop signs. I understand further that the Garda Commissioner has issued a statutory request to the corporation to provide traffic light signals at the junction and that arrangements are being made by the corporation for the invitation of tenders for the supply of the necessary equipment. The corporation expect that the traffic light signals will be in operation in about nine months time.

Does the Minister think it wise that the "Winking Willie" was removed?

I did not remove it.

I asked the Minister did he think it wise.

It was necessary. Whether it was wise or not, it was necessary.
