Vol. 235 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Movement of Persons and Goods from Rhodesia.

4.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if it is intended that Ireland should devise some independent method to control the movement of persons and goods into Britain from Rhodesia through Ireland in accordance with the decisions of the United Nations Security Council resolution of 29th May, 1968.

The Aliens Act, 1935 and the orders made thereunder already empower the Government to prohibit the landing in the State of non-exempted aliens. An alien cannot land in the State without a valid travel document and passports issued by the Salisbury regime are not recognised by us as valid travel documents.

The importation of goods from Southern Rhodesia is already prohibited, save under licence, by the Restriction of Imports (Goods from Southern Rhodesia) Order, 1966.

Could the Minister say whether in the past 12 months any such licence was issued?

That is a separate question.

Every time we ask the Minister a question, it is a separate one. This is relevant to the original question.

If the Deputy thinks so, why did he not put it down?

The Minister has all the information.

I am not a prophet and able to know what extra information the Deputy will want.

Nobody wants the Minister to prophesy but only to tell us have any such licences been issued in the past 12 months.

Put down a question and you will get an answer.

The Minister's job is to conceal information.

(Interruptions.)
