Vol. 235 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Widows and Dependants of Civil Servants.

26.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will take such steps as may be necessary, including the introduction of legislation, to provide for widows and dependants of civil servants, pensions in line with those provided by the Houses of the Oireachtas (Members) Pensions Scheme; and, if not, why.

As I mentioned in the Seanad on the motion to amend the Houses of the Oireachtas (Members) Pensions Scheme, I have accepted in principle that a widows' and orphans' pensions scheme be introduced for the Civil Service. My Department is at present engaged in drawing up a suitable scheme in consultation with representatives of various Civil Service staff associations. It is not possible at this stage to say what the terms of the proposed scheme will be.
