asked the Taoiseach the total population of this country on the latest date for which figures are available; and the number of persons in receipt of social welfare allowances.

The estimated total population of the State in April, 1967, was 2,899,000 persons.

The estimated total number of persons in receipt of social welfare allowances, other than children's allowances, administered by the Department of Social Welfare, in April, 1967 was 334,550. The estimated number of persons in receipt of children's allowances in the same month was 322,785, some of whom would also have been in receipt of other social welfare allowances.
