asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding the establishment of a university in Limerick; and whether he proposes to take any steps to provide a limited number of first year university courses in Limerick for the next academic year.

As I have already informed the House, this is one of the matters which is being considered in conjunction with the recommendations of the Commission on Higher Education as part of an assessment of the future provision for higher education in the country generally.

I hope to be in a position very soon to make an announcement in relation to all the relevant matters. There could be no question of considering the position of Limerick in isolation.

Now that the by-election in Limerick is over.
