Vol. 235 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Attire of Garda Pointsmen.

22.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will allow gardaí to work in shirt sleeves during hot spells of weather.

The Garda Síochána is a disciplined, uniformed force whose mode of apparel is prescribed in the Garda code.

There is specific provision in the code for the dress of traffic pointsmen and in warm weather they are permitted to remove their tunics.

I have consulted the Commissioner who does not consider that any further relaxation in uniform requirements would be in the interests of the efficiency of the Force.

Would you allow Ministers to work in their shirtsleeves since they are not a disciplined force?

If we wanted lessons in indiscipline, we would get them from the Deputy.
