Vol. 235 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bandon Industry.

39.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the urgent need for establishing an industry in Bandon town, County Cork, in view of the number of unemployed; and if he will take steps to have one established there.

I am aware of the need for establishing new industries in Bandon and other areas. The selection of a location for an industrial project is, however, a matter for the promoters and those proposing to invest their capital in the project. The Government provide valuable facilities to encourage the establishment and development of industries in all areas. It is for private enterprise to take advantage of these facilities and local interests should do their best to encourage private enterprise to set up industries in their own areas.

I can assure the Deputy that any sound proposals by local or other interests for the establishment of industries in Bandon will receive all possible assistance from my Department and from the Industrial Development Authority.

While I appreciate the answer given, it is true to say also that the Minister informed an organisation in another town that he would provide that town with another industry. That town was Mallow.

(Interruptions.)

I read a report——

This is Question Time, not the time for a de

Surely if a Fianna Fáil club says that the Minister has promised a factory in Mallow——

Did the Deputy see that report?

I will take Deputy Creed's word for it. If he says he read it, I believe him.

I read it.

Can the Minister tell us what did happen?

The Minister will tell the members of Taca.
