Vol. 235 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Coast Fishing Grant.

40.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether a grant application has been received from an outside firm interested in engaging in fishing off the west coast; or whether such an application would be favourably considered.

Projects for the processing of fish are eligible for industrial grants. Applications for such grants are handled by the Industrial Development Authority but it is not the practice to give information about them while they are under consideration.

The question I asked was whether the Minister was aware of such an application. Is the Minister aware that there is or is not an application?

It is not the practice to give information about them while they are under consideration. I can tell the Deputy that no grant of the kind he envisages has been given or approved.

I appreciate that it is not the practice to give the names of the firms, but before this, I have heard the Minister answering when there was in fact under consideration an application for a grant in a particular area.

It must be under consideration.

The Minister does not seem to be prepared to say is there or is there not an application.

The Deputy will appreciate that in a case like this, while the name might not be mentioned, any information at all about it could be related only to one particular project. I have given the Deputy the information which I think he seeks, that no grant of the kind he envisages has been approved.

I am simply asking is there an application. The Minister normally gives that information.

I do not think I do.

While withholding the names, the Minister has given that information before.

The answer is "yes"; there is such an application.
