Vol. 235 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Athlone Hospital Appointments.

50.

asked the Minister for Health the date on which an operating theatre and suite of rooms were provided for a resident medical officer at St. Vincent's Hospital, Athlone, though no such officer has been appointed; and when a resident medical officer will be appointed for this hospital.

The plans for the reconstruction of Athlone District Hospital which was completed in 1958 included an operating theatre and two flats for resident staff. One of the flats is now occupied by nurses and the local authority is being asked to consider the use of the second flat for the same purpose. I would point out that this is a district hospital and it is not contemplated that surgical services will be developed there. It is at present staffed by two part-time medical officers. It is not the practice to appoint resident medical staff in such hospitals and I have received no proposal from the health authority for the making of such an appointment.

51.

asked the Minister for Health when the latest advertisement for a full-time radiographer in St. Vincent's Hospital, Athlone, was published; why no appointment was made for this position since that date; and when this position will be filled.

I am informed that no advertisement has been published in relation to the appointment of a full-time radiographer at St. Vincent's Hospital, Athlone. I have, however, approved of the health authority's proposal to make such an appointment and I expect an appointment will be made when present differences about the X-ray apparatus to be provided are resolved.
