Vol. 235 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pollution of River Suir.

24.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that the fishermen of the Cheek Point area on the River Suir complain that oil and hot water are being discharged from the ESB station on the river and are polluting the river to such an extent that salmon fishing there is seriously impaired; if he will have the matter investigated; and, if the pollution cannot be remedied, if he will grant permission to fish a further area up river from the present boundaries.

My Department has not received any report to this effect. Should there be a discharge of the kind indicated the proper course would be for the fishermen, in consultation with the local board of fishery conservators, to take up the matter with the Electricity Supply Board. In the foregoing circumstances, I do not accept that any question arises of considering what is suggested in the final part of the question.
