Vol. 235 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fire Precautions.

27.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether in view of a recent fire tragedy in Dublin he will consider what steps he can take to strengthen fire precautions in occupied dwellings of more than two storeys, including the compulsory provision of fire extinguishers.

I have on a number of occasions impressed on local authorities the importance of carrying out under the Fire Brigades Act, 1940, surveys of potentially dangerous buildings in their areas. The authority may require the proprietor to refrain from using any such building unless specified fire precautions are taken.

In view of the recent fire, would the Minister once again urge local authorities to strengthen the enforcement of these fire precautions, particularly in apartment houses where elderly people are living and who in the event of a fire are particularly helpless?

That has been done on a number of occasions. I do everything possible to impress this on local authorities.
