Vol. 235 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kildare Housing Subsidy.

37.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider granting Kildare County Council the full housing subsidy of 66? per cent on all new houses provided by the council for families overholding married quarters on the Curragh Camp.

I have power to pay subsidy at the rate of 66? per cent only for the purposes set out in section 44 of the Housing Act, 1966. These purposes include the provision of houses for the accommodation of persons —

(1) living in overcrowded conditions or,

(2) in need of housing on medical, compassionate or other similar grounds if their circumstances would not permit them to be otherwise housed.

An examination of the circumstances of 19 of the families submitted some time ago to my Department for a ruling as to their eligibility for higher subsidy on the latter ground indicated that six would, in fact, be eligible.
