Vol. 235 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emission of Noxious Fumes.

39.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of convictions in each of the last three years in respect of the emission of noxious fumes from motor vehicles; and whether, in view of the prevalence of this nuisance and its danger to health, he will have increased attention directed to it.

Separate statistics in respect of such offences are not kept and an examination of records throughout the country would be necessary to extract them. It can be taken that they are not numerous. The current Road Traffic Bill contains provision for the inspection and examination of vehicles by authorised officers of the Minister for Local Government and the effectiveness of the regulations relating to the construction, equipment and use of vehicles, including those relating to the emission of fumes, etc., will no doubt be greatly strengthened when the inspections and examinations get under way.

Is the Minister aware that these regulations are being violated every day? Will he have further inquiries made to see if any real attention is being paid to the various regulations?

That is the purpose of the current Road Traffic Bill, to strengthen the hand of the Garda.

Would the Minister concede that the biggest offender in this regard are CIE, and that their buses in the city of Dublin——

That is not my question.

It is my question. Would the Minister confirm or deny that?
