Vol. 235 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sligo Bog Development.

9.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware that there are large tracts of bog in South Sligo and also in the Dromore West area of County Sligo; and if he will have these bogs examined with a view to State development in order to afford much-needed employment for able bodied people who prefer work to unemployment benefit.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that the bogs in South Sligo are too small for economic exploitation by the Board's present methods, and that the bogs of the Ox Mountains in the Dromore West area of County Sligo could not be economically worked because of difficult gradients and ravines, irregularity of bog depth, high altitude and rainfall.
