Vol. 235 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballingarry (Tipperary) Dispensary Doctor.

53.

asked the Minister for Health whether he is aware of the need for a permanent dispensary doctor at Ballingarry, Thurles, County Tipperary, and for proper dispensary facilities to cater for the needs of the people of the area; what proposals he has in mind to deal with these matters; and whether he will take action so that the needs of the area will be attended to quickly.

I am fully aware of the need for the services of a doctor for the Ballingarry dispensary district.

As I informed the Deputy, in reply to a recent question on the same subject, a competition has been held for permanent medical posts in several dispensary districts including Ballingarry. The results of the competition are awaited.

In the meantime, a private practitioner in an adjoining town has been appointed as a temporary district medical officer for the area.

I understand that the Council are in the process of purchasing the house of the former district medical officer in Ballingarry and will make it available for a resident doctor. The Council intend to renovate the house, including the dispensary, which forms part of it.
