Vol. 236 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cavan Post Office Buildings.

13.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that the post office buildings in Cavan town are quite unsatisfactory for their purpose; and that telephone facilities in the town are also very inadequate; if in view of this he will arrange to proceed with the building of the new post office and telephone exchange; and if he will make a statement on the present position of the arrangements for the erection of these buildings.

I am aware that Cavan Post Office premises are insufficient for present requirements. Plans for the erection of a new post office and telephone exchange are at an advanced stage and it is hoped that, all going well, work on the main buildings will be commenced early next year. Additional telephone trunk circuits between Cavan, Mullingar and Dublin are available following the recent laying of a co-axial cable system between Mullingar and Cavan and these combined with additional circuits which are being provided within the county should result in a considerably improved telephone service. Additional operating positions will also be installed at Cavan.
