Vol. 236 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Foot and Mouth Regulations.

31.

asked the Minister for Justice (a) the number of people prosecuted and convicted for infringements of the foot and mouth disease regulations, (b) the total amount of fines imposed, (c) the total amount collected to date and (d) the number of cases in which remission or mitigation was granted.

The latest figures available in my Department are as follows: 917 persons were prosecuted in connection with the foot and mouth disease regulations; 508 were formally convicted but eight have since appealed to the circuit court. A further 209 were given the benefit of the Probation Act, 1907, the charge having been proven, and in 19 other cases, the charge was adjourned.

The total amount of fines imposed was approximately £5,000.

Information as to the amounts paid so far has not been compiled and, since these cases are grouped with other offences in district court records, its compilation would involve an amount of work in district court offices altogether disproportionate to its value.

No remission or mitigation of any of these fines has been granted. I have, however, received a number of petitions which are still under consideration.
