Vol. 236 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Spinning on County Galway River.

19.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that at a public inquiry held last year it was decided to prohibit spinning on the Kilcolgan river, County Following is the statement:

Galway; and that despite this prohibition spinning is taking place; and if he will take whatever steps are open to him to put an end to this type of fishing on this river.

A public inquiry was held in December last into this matter and the making of a restrictive bye-law is under consideration in the light of the information furnished at the inquiry about angling lures and methods of fishing on this river. The enforcement of any such bye-law would be a matter for the Galway Board of Fishery Conservators.

Is the Minister aware that this restriction is not being imposed and would he take whatever action is within his power to see that it is imposed?

As I have said in my reply, the making of the restrictive bye-law is still under consideration. One of the reasons for the delay, apparently, in this is in defining the actual territory or area to which the law was to apply. It was somewhat difficult to determine. Certain people had to try to define this in a concise and technical way. This has been the main cause of the hold-up, of late, in any case. I will push along with the matter.

The information is that stocks have been cleared completely.

So I understand, yes.
