Vol. 236 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Taxation.

4.

asked the Minister for Local Government if it is intended that a new system of local government tatation will be in operation for the beginning of the next financial year as a result of the special committee on rating's findings; and how soon that committee will publish its report.

The committee has submitted three interim reports. Summarised versions of two reports have been published and the third report, which discusses rates and other sources of revenue for local authorities, is being printed. Preparation of a fourth report is well advanced. The committee's investigations have not yet reached the stage where proposals for any changes which might be found to be necessary in the system of local government finance and taxation could be prepared.

The Minister is not in a position to say approximately when the final report will be presented to him?

The Minister could not give any sort of guess? Would it be in five or ten years?

I do not think so.

Less than five?

When was it established?

A number of years ago. I have not got the actual date.
